2 minutes with Dan, one of our Heads of Merchandising!

My name is Dan, I’m currently Head of Merchandising on footwear and accessorie, I’m holding maternity cover position on there, I’ve been with the business since summer 2002 so 16 years a long time. I joined the business on ladieswear as an entry level trainee and over the years I’ve worked on pretty much every division including the International function and worked my way through the levels to the position I’m in now. This is probably going to sound like a bit of a cliche but I would definitely say the people and the culture, in the business we always say as a business we like to keep things simple and we like to have fun along the way while we do that and I wouldn’t have stayed here for 16 years if that wasn’t the case. In my role, people play a big part in the focus of what I do and I do love developing and training and managing teams and supporting people to develop through their careers but I would still say the thing that gives me the biggest buzz is trading seasons successfully and really looking back and thinking to yourself yeah I did a great job there but as ever in retail though you never really get time to rest on your laurels too long it’s soon on to the next season, thinking how we can better it. Okay I think I’ll go for a little bit of alliteration I would say “focused” “forward-thinking” and “friendly” and fun, if I could have a 4th. I think firstly were posting some great results in what’s a very tough environment out there and I think we’re well-placed and agile enough for that to continue but the big thing for me I think as a business that’s really come on over the last few years in particular is our focus on people and their development this is really backed by the board and it’s something that has really been invested in as a business and real big focus for the business we have a learning and development team who sole focus is to develop our people we have the Me. website which stands for Matalan Education where we have a whole host of tools and supporting documents to help people develop and we’ve also in the last year, we’ve introduced career paths and these are the tools that enable people to really focus on their career and understand what the next steps are and what their expectations are within their role.
